Racing with crypto stakes: place terms, non-runners and the big meetings
Racing has more settlement rules than any other sport on a crypto coupon, and most of them were written long before anyone staked a coin. Learn the place terms and Rule 4 once and every race card reads differently.

A racing slip is settled by a rulebook older than any blockchain. Place terms, non-runner deductions and ante-post voids all come from the Tattersalls Committee Rules on Betting in Britain, and crypto horse racing betting inherits them along with the race card. A crypto sportsbook is not obliged to copy those rules word for word, so its own racing rules always have the final say, but the Tattersalls text is the reference most of the vocabulary comes from.
Win, each way and forecasts
A win bet needs the horse to finish first. Nothing else on the card is as simple.
An each-way bet is two bets of equal stake: one on the horse to win and one on it to be placed. So 10 USDT each way costs 20. The place part pays a fraction of the win price, and the places that count depend on the race.
Example: 10 USDT each way at 9.00 in a ten-runner race paying a fifth of the odds for three places. The place price is 1 + (8.00 / 5) = 2.60. If the horse finishes second, the win part loses and the place part returns 26. If it wins, both parts pay: 90 plus 26, a total return of 116 for a 20 stake.
Forecasts ask for the finishing order:
- Straight forecast: two horses, first and second in that exact order.
- Reverse forecast: the same two horses in either order, which is two bets and costs double.
- Tricast: the first three in exact order, usually offered on races with enough runners.
How a forecast is priced, fixed at the time of the bet or worked out after the race, is set in the sportsbook racing rules. Either way, forecasts suit anyone who would rather back an opinion on the shape of a race than on a single winner.
How place terms are set for each race
Under Rule 3 of the Tattersalls rules, each-way bets other than ante-post bets settle on the number of horses that actually start:
| Starters | Place fraction | Places paid |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | None, all to win | Winner only |
| 5 to 7 | 1/4 of the odds | 1st, 2nd |
| 8 or more | 1/5 of the odds | 1st, 2nd, 3rd |
| Handicap, 12 to 15 | 1/4 of the odds | 1st, 2nd, 3rd |
| Handicap, 16 or more | 1/4 of the odds | 1st to 4th |
Note the word “start”. If a nine-runner race loses two horses at the stalls, it becomes a seven-runner race and only two places are paid. That is the commonest each-way surprise in crypto horse racing betting, and the only defence is to check the field just before the off. Better terms on a feature race, such as an extra place, are shown on that race and apply to it alone.
Rule 4: what a non-runner costs you
When a horse is withdrawn after you took a price on the day, the remaining horses had a better chance than your odds suggested. Rule 4(C) claws that back with a deduction from winnings, based on the price of the horse that came out.
| Price of withdrawn horse | Decimal | Deduction per pound of winnings |
|---|---|---|
| 1/9 or shorter | 1.11 or less | 90p |
| Evens to 6/5 | 2.00 to 2.20 | 45p |
| 9/2 to 11/2 | 5.50 to 6.50 | 15p |
| 6/1 to 9/1 | 7.00 to 10.00 | 10p |
| 10/1 to 14/1 | 11.00 to 15.00 | 5p |
| Over 14/1 | Above 15.00 | None |
The full scale has nineteen bands, and the total deduction is capped at 90 pence in the pound however many horses go. A worked case: 10 USDT to win at 6.00, so 50 in winnings. A rival at 4/1 is withdrawn, which on the scale means 20p. Winnings fall to 40 and the return to 50 instead of 60. The deduction never touches the stake itself.
Ante-post: the early price and its catch
An ante-post bet is placed before the day of the race, often weeks or months ahead. The reward is a bigger price. The catch, under Rule 4(A), is that a single ante-post bet struck before the final declarations is void only in specific situations: the race is abandoned or declared void, its conditions change, the venue moves, or the horse is eliminated under the racing authority's schedule. If your horse simply goes lame or is aimed at a different race, the bet is lost. No Rule 4 deduction applies to other horses either, because the scale covers prices taken on the day.
That timeframe is why the coin matters for crypto horse racing betting more than for most sports. A stake placed in October for a March festival sits for five months. USDT is pegged one-to-one with the dollar by its issuer, so the value of the stake does not drift while you wait; a volatile coin can turn a winning ticket into a smaller gain in your own currency.

Racing's calendar gives crypto horse racing betting its high points. These dates come from the racecourses themselves:
- Melbourne Cup Day: Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington, with the Cup run over 3200 metres. See our Australia guide.
- Cheltenham Festival: 16 to 19 March 2027, with the Gold Cup on the Friday. Our Cheltenham page goes through the four days.
- Grand National: Saturday 10 April 2027 at Aintree, a big-field handicap where four places are standard.
- Punchestown Festival: Tuesday 27 April to Saturday 1 May 2027. The Ireland guide covers stakes in euros.
Big fields at these meetings mean the handicap place terms in the table above come into play more often than on an ordinary weekday card.
Crypto horse racing betting sites and their payout rules
Racing produces occasional large returns from small stakes, especially on forecasts and ante-post doubles, so the moment the sportsbook asks for documents matters. The list starts with Vave and then follows how precisely each operator's rules state that moment.

Rocketpot asks for documents above 0.05 BTC or $2,500. Bitcasino.io sets the line at withdrawals above €2,500. BetPlays checks at the first withdrawal. Vave can ask before any payout and gives 14 days to supply them. Rainbet allows 72 hours once documents are requested, while Metaspins allows 30 days. For the scoring behind this order, read the methodology.
Before the off
- Count the runners again after the final withdrawals and confirm the place terms.
- Check whether your price was taken on the day or ante-post, because the non-runner rules differ.
- For forecasts, decide between straight and reverse before staking, since the cost doubles.
- Keep long-range stakes in a coin that holds its value.
- Read the bet types guide if a market name is unfamiliar.
