Singles, multiples, handicaps and props: what each slip actually asks

Every bet on a sportsbook coupon is a question with a settlement rule attached. This page takes the common ones in turn, from a single to a Lucky 15, and works each through with stakes in USDT so the arithmetic is visible.

A bet is a question with a price on it. Some questions are simple: will this team win? Others bundle several answers into one slip, or shift the starting line so that a strong side has to win by a margin. The price tells you what the sportsbook thinks; the bet type tells you what has to happen for you to be paid. Learn the second before you trust the first.

How a decimal price turns into a return

Every example on this page uses decimal prices and stakes in USDT, a stablecoin issued against US dollars held in reserve. A decimal price already includes your stake. A 10 USDT bet at 2.10 returns 21.00 USDT if it wins: 11.00 profit plus the 10 you put in.

Turning a price into a probability is one division. 1 divided by 2.10 is 0.476, so the sportsbook is pricing the outcome at about 47.6 %, plus its margin. If you think the real chance is higher than that, the price may be worth taking. If not, the bet type does not rescue it.

Single bets: the simplest of the sports bet types

The single is the base unit. One selection, one stake, one settlement. If the selection wins you are paid at the price; if it loses the stake is gone; if the event is void the stake comes back.

Common single markets on a football coupon:

  • Match result (1X2): home win, draw or away win, settled on the score after normal time plus stoppage time.
  • Double chance: two of the three outcomes in one bet, for example home or draw. The price is shorter because you cover more.
  • Draw no bet: a win pays, a draw returns the stake, a defeat loses. It removes the draw at the cost of a lower price.
  • Both teams to score: yes or no, regardless of who wins.

Every one of those is a single when it sits alone on the slip.

Doubles, trebles and the accumulator

Put two singles on one slip as a combined bet and you have a double. The prices multiply, and every leg has to win.

SlipSelections (example prices)Combined priceReturn on 10 USDT
Single2.102.1021.00
Double1.80 × 2.003.6036.00
Treble1.80 × 2.00 × 1.505.4054.00
Fourfold1.80 × 2.00 × 1.50 × 1.709.1891.80

Anything beyond a treble is usually called an accumulator, or a parlay in North America. Each leg you add raises the return and lowers the chance that the slip lands, and the sportsbook's margin compounds with every leg. The accumulator guide covers that compounding in detail, and the parlay calculator does the multiplication for you.

System bets: sports bet types that bundle multiples

A system bet is a bundle. You choose a set of selections and the slip places every combination of a given type, each at the same unit stake. The total cost is the unit stake times the number of bets.

NameSelectionsBets on the slipWhat it contains
Trixie343 doubles, 1 treble
Patent373 singles, 3 doubles, 1 treble
Yankee4116 doubles, 4 trebles, 1 fourfold
Lucky 15415a Yankee plus 4 singles
Canadian (Super Yankee)526every double up to the fivefold
Heinz657every double up to the sixfold

A worked Trixie, 1 USDT a line, total stake 4 USDT, on the three prices from the table above (1.80, 2.00, 1.50):

  1. All three win. The doubles return 3.60, 2.70 and 3.00; the treble returns 5.40. Total back: 14.70 USDT.
  2. Only the 1.80 and 2.00 win. One double lands for 3.60. You staked 4, so the slip is down 0.40.
  3. One or none win. Nothing comes back.

That second line is the point people miss. A system bet softens one loser, but it does not make the slip profitable unless the winners are priced well. More lines also mean more margin paid.

Handicaps and totals

A handicap moves the start line. The stronger side gives away goals, points or games; the weaker side receives them.

European handicap is a three-way market. Home -1 wins only if the home side wins by two or more. A one-goal home win is a “handicap draw”, which is its own selection.

Asian handicap removes the draw. The common lines:

  • -0.5: the team must win. Same as backing it in the match result, usually at a similar price.
  • -1: a win by two or more wins; a win by exactly one is a push and the stake comes back; anything else loses.
  • -0.75: a quarter line. Half the stake goes on -0.5, half on -1.

A quarter-line example: 20 USDT on -0.75 at 1.95, and the team wins 1–0. The -0.5 half wins and returns 10 × 1.95 = 19.50. The -1 half is a push and returns 10. Total back: 29.50 USDT on 20 staked.

Totals (over/under) work the same way on the number of goals, points or games. Over 2.5 goals needs three; over 2 is a push on exactly two; over 2.25 splits the stake between over 2 and over 2.5. Two goals on over 2.25 means half refunded and half lost.

Handicaps exist in most sports under other names: the run line in baseball, the point spread in basketball and American football, game handicaps in tennis.

Props and outrights

Props (propositions) are bets on something inside the match rather than its result: a player to score, shots on target, corners, cards, a batter's runs. Two things to check before staking. First, the source of the data, because props are settled on the official statistics the sportsbook names. Second, the non-starter rule: a player prop is usually void if the player does not take part, but some books settle it as a loss once the player is named in the squad.

Outrights are bets on a whole competition: the league winner, the tournament's top scorer, the golfer leading after 72 holes. The stake is tied up for weeks or months. In a stablecoin that matters little; in a volatile coin, the value of your stake changes every day the bet stays open.

Outrights bring one rule singles rarely meet: the dead heat. If two players finish joint top scorer and you backed one at 9.00 with 10 USDT, the stake is divided by two. 5 USDT is paid at 9.00, so 45.00 comes back, and the other 5 is lost.

Matching the bet type to the question you can answer

The sports bet types differ in one thing above all: how many things have to go right. A single needs one. A fourfold needs four. A Heinz pays something with two winners but costs 57 stakes. Before choosing, ask which question you have a real view on.

  • A view on one match result: a single.
  • A view that the favourite wins comfortably: an Asian handicap.
  • A view on the shape of the game but not the winner: a total.
  • A view on a player: a prop, after reading the non-starter rule.
  • A view on the season: an outright, staked in a coin that holds its value.

Live markets are their own subject, with prices that move by the second; the live betting guide explains them. All of these sports bet types are listed for each sportsbook in the comparison below.

Sportsbooks for every bet type, ranked by document rules

Every sportsbook in the table offers the standard coupon. The difference that affects you after a winning slip is when the operator asks for identity documents. Vave may ask before any withdrawal and gives 14 days to send them (clause 8.7). BetPlays asks on the first withdrawal (clause 6.1). Bitcasino.io asks above €2,500 (clause 6.6), Rocketpot above 0.05 BTC or $2,500 (clause 11.4). Rainbet allows 72 hours to supply documents; Metaspins allows 30 days.

Open

Which of the sports bet types is best for a beginner?
The single. One selection, one price, one result. You can see exactly what you risk and what you get back, and a loss teaches you something about one market rather than five.
What is the difference between a Trixie and a Patent?
Both use three selections. A Trixie is four bets: three doubles and one treble. A Patent adds the three singles, so it is seven bets and returns something if only one selection wins.
What happens to an Asian handicap of -1 if my team wins by exactly one goal?
The bet is a push and the stake comes back. A win by two or more wins the bet; a draw or a defeat loses it.
What does dead heat mean on an outright?
Two or more selections tie for the position you backed. The stake is divided by the number of tied selections and that share is paid at the full price, while the rest of the stake is lost.
Are returns on a crypto sportsbook calculated differently?
No. The decimal price multiplies the stake in the same way. The only difference is that the stake and the return are in a coin, so their value in your own currency depends on the rate when you bet and when you withdraw.
