Four days in March: championship races, ante-post prices and each-way terms
The 2027 Cheltenham Festival runs from Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 March, seven races a day. Most of the betting decisions are made months earlier, and the rules for those early bets differ from the ones on the day.

Cheltenham in March is four afternoons of jump racing, 28 races in all, and the championship events have been priced since the previous spring. For cheltenham crypto betting the coin in your wallet changes nothing about how a race is settled. What does change the outcome of a slip is timing: a bet struck in October sits under different rules from one struck on the morning of the race, and each-way terms depend on the type of race and how many horses start.
The 2027 Festival, day by day
The meeting runs from Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 March 2027. Each day is built around one championship race.
| Day | Date | Championship race | Other Grade 1 races |
|---|---|---|---|
| Champion Day | Tuesday 16 March | Champion Hurdle | Supreme Novices' Hurdle, Arkle Challenge Trophy |
| Style Wednesday | Wednesday 17 March | Queen Mother Champion Chase (2 miles) | Baring Bingham Novices' Hurdle, Brown Advisory Novices' Chase, Champion Bumper |
| St Patrick's Thursday | Thursday 18 March | Stayers' Hurdle (3 miles) and Ryanair Chase | Golden Miller Novices' Chase, Mares' Hurdle |
| Gold Cup Day | Friday 19 March | Gold Cup (3 miles 2½ furlongs) | Triumph Hurdle, Spa Novices' Hurdle |
The championship races are not handicaps. Every horse carries a set weight, so the best horse on form usually heads the market, and the shape of the betting differs from the big handicaps run on the same cards. The crowd's noise as the tape goes up for the opening race, known as the Cheltenham roar, is about the only thing on Tuesday that cannot be priced.

Ante-post or on the day
The biggest choice in cheltenham crypto betting is when to strike the bet. The Tattersalls rules define an ante-post bet as one struck before the day of the race. For Cheltenham that can mean months ahead. The appeal is the price: a horse that will start at 4.00 on Gold Cup day may have been 15.00 in the autumn. The cost is the risk that it never lines up.
Under Rule 4(A), a single ante-post bet placed before 10 a.m. on the day of final declarations is void in only five cases:
- The race is abandoned.
- The race is declared void.
- The conditions of the race are changed before it starts.
- The venue is changed.
- The horse is eliminated under the racing authority's rules.
Anything else, including injury, a change of plan or the trainer choosing a different race, makes the bet a loser. That last point matters at Cheltenham more than anywhere. A top chaser can be aimed at the Gold Cup, the Ryanair Chase or the Champion Chase, and connections often decide late. Backing a horse ante-post for one race is partly a bet on that decision.
Some sportsbooks offer “non-runner, no bet” on festival markets in the weeks before the meeting. Where offered, it is shown on the market, the price is usually shorter, and it replaces the default rule only for that market.
Non-runners on the day
Once you bet on the day of the race, a different rule applies. If a horse is withdrawn after you take a price, Rule 4(C) reduces winning returns on the rest of the field according to the withdrawn horse's price. A few points from the scale:
- Evens to 6/5 (2.00 to 2.20): 45 pence off each pound of winnings.
- 9/5 to 9/4 (2.80 to 3.25): 30 pence.
- 10/1 to 14/1 (11.00 to 15.00): 5 pence.
- Longer than 14/1: nothing.
Total deductions are capped at 90 pence in the pound, however many horses come out. Bets at starting price are not affected unless there was no time to form a new market.
Example: you back a horse at 6.00 with 20 USDT on the morning of the Champion Hurdle, and a rival at 3.00 is withdrawn later that day. The deduction is 30 pence in the pound. Winnings of 100 become 70, so the return is 90 USDT instead of 120.
Each-way terms race by race
Rule 3 sets the default place terms by the number of horses that actually start. They apply to bets struck on the day; ante-post each-way bets settle on the terms shown when you placed them.
| Race type and starters | Fraction | Places |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 runners | Win only | — |
| 5 to 7 runners | 1/4 | 1, 2 |
| 8 or more runners (not a handicap) | 1/5 | 1, 2, 3 |
| Handicap, 12 to 15 runners | 1/4 | 1, 2, 3 |
| Handicap, 16 or more runners | 1/4 | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
For the four championship races, the non-handicap lines are what matter. A small field in the Champion Chase changes the each-way value a lot: drop from eight starters to seven, and the bet pays two places instead of three. For the big festival handicaps, a full field means four places at a quarter of the odds.
Worked example for cheltenham crypto betting: 10 USDT each way at 11.00 in the Gold Cup with ten starters, a fifth of the odds for three places. The place price is 1 + (10.00 / 5) = 3.00. Third place returns 30 USDT from the 20 staked. A win returns 110 plus 30, 140 in all.
Sportsbooks often pay extra places on festival races. Those terms are shown on the race and beat the default only for that race. More on each-way maths sits in our horse racing guide.

Four days of racing invite small stakes on many races. Plan the total before Tuesday. Our bankroll guide covers how to split a budget across a busy meeting.
An ante-post bet placed in December is open for three months. In a volatile coin its value in pounds or euros can move far more than the price of the horse. USDT is pegged one-to-one with the US dollar, which keeps the stake stable while you wait.
Payout speed matters on Friday evening. Wild.io states 10 to 60 minutes. Rainbet's main page states 5 to 15 minutes in normal conditions. Vave allows up to 3 days (clause 8.1), Rocketpot 72 hours (clause 11.3) and BetPlays up to 5 banking days (clause 6.6). Metaspins does not print a time.

Document checks can stop a big each-way payout. Rocketpot asks for documents above 0.05 BTC or $2,500, BetPlays at the first withdrawal, and Vave may ask before any payout, allowing 14 days. Rainbet gives 72 hours to supply them, Metaspins 30 days. Our methodology explains how these rules feed the order.
Festival-week routine
A few habits keep cheltenham crypto betting under control across the four days.
- Note which race each ante-post selection is aimed at, and watch for a switch.
- Check each-way terms on the race card on the morning, not the night before.
- Recalculate any return after a withdrawal using Rule 4.
- Keep a single budget for all four days.
- Stop if a losing Tuesday tempts you to chase on Friday; our responsible gambling page lists the tools.
Other events on the calendar are listed on our league hub.
