The AFL home-and-away season is 24 matches long, and its Grand Final is always played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The NRL plays the same number of rounds per team and stages its Grand Final at Stadium Australia, where it has been a Sunday night fixture since 2001. In the middle of the NRL season comes State of Origin, a representative round that pulls players out of their clubs and can change the club markets around it. With 24 games a season, a single round matters more than one game in an 82-game sport but less than an NFL week. That makes round-by-round line bets and season-long ladder positions the two natural ways to bet footy, with very different time horizons.
Cricket summer and the Boxing Day Test
When footy finishes, cricket takes over. The Boxing Day Test begins every year on 26 December at the MCG, and the Big Bash League, a T20 competition with eight city-based franchises, runs from December to February.

The Melbourne Cup: 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday
The Melbourne Cup is run at Flemington over 3,200 metres and starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November. Much of Victoria has the day off for it. In 2026 the first Tuesday of November falls on 3 November.
By then Victoria has been on daylight time for a month, so the start is at UTC+11. A sportsbook printing times in UTC lists the race at 4:00 am. In Brisbane it is 2:00 pm, because Queensland stays on standard time. In Adelaide, on ACDT at UTC+10:30, it is 2:30 pm. AEST, AEDT and the October change
Eastern Australia runs on AEST, which is UTC+10. In New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT the clocks go forward to AEDT, UTC+11, from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. South Australia moves to ACDT, UTC+10:30. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory keep the same time all year. In 2026 the change came on 4 October.
