Ice hockey with crypto: regulation time, overtime and the puck line
In hockey the first thing to read is not the price but the clock the market uses. A 60-minute bet and a moneyline on the same game can settle differently on the same final score.

Hockey has more ways to finish a game than any other major team sport. A match can end in regulation, in overtime or in a shootout, and each market on the board decides which of those counts. Get that right and the rest of crypto hockey betting is ordinary price-reading; get it wrong and a correct opinion on the game still loses.
Regulation time against the full game
Every hockey market belongs to one of two families.
- 60-minute markets (also called regulation time or three-way) settle on the score after three 20-minute periods. Overtime and the shootout are ignored. Because a tie is possible, there are three outcomes: home, draw, away.
- Full-game markets include whatever overtime is played and, in the NHL regular season, the shootout. The moneyline here is two-way: someone always wins.
The two prices tell you different things. As an example, a home favourite might be 1.65 on the moneyline but 2.05 in the 60-minute market, because in the three-way version a draw after 60 minutes beats you. The draw itself is often priced around 4.00 in an evenly matched NHL game (example only).
Which one to choose? If your view is “this side is better over a full game”, use the moneyline. If you expect a close game to need overtime, the draw in the 60-minute market is the cleaner way to say so.
How NHL overtime and shootouts work
In the regular season a tied NHL game goes to a five-minute overtime played three-on-three. If neither side scores, a shootout decides the winner.
The playoffs drop both of those. Postseason overtime is played in full 20-minute periods at five-on-five, sudden death, for as many periods as it takes. There is no shootout.
For betting this changes two things:
- A regular-season overtime is short and open. Three skaters a side leave a lot of ice, and games often end quickly.
- A playoff overtime can last for hours. Totals and live markets behave very differently once a game reaches a second extra period.
European leagues use their own formats, and they are not always the same as the NHL's. Before you bet on a league outside North America, read how its regular-season ties are resolved.
Puck line and totals in crypto hockey betting
The puck line is hockey's handicap, almost always set at 1.5 goals. The favourite at -1.5 needs to win by two; the underdog at +1.5 covers by winning or losing by one.
One detail makes the puck line unusual: the empty net. A team trailing by one late in the third period often pulls its goaltender for an extra skater. That raises the chance of a late equaliser, but also of an empty-net goal that turns a one-goal win into a two-goal win. Puck line favourites live on those goals.
The second detail is the shootout. A shootout produces a winner but the house still has to decide what the final score was. Read how your sportsbook counts a shootout in the puck line and in totals; some settle on goals from regulation and overtime, others add one goal to the winner. The answer can flip a bet.
Totals in the NHL are usually set at 5.5 or 6.5 goals. A total over 6.5 needs seven goals, and an overtime winner counts in full-game totals.

The NHL 2026–27 season and European hockey
The 2026–27 NHL regular season opened on 29 September 2026 and is due to end on 10 April 2027. Each team plays 84 games this season instead of 82, with the two extra games against divisional opponents, while the preseason was cut short to fit them in. The Stanley Cup playoffs follow in April.

Outdoor games bring weather and unfamiliar ice into the price. Games in Europe start in the evening there, which means the morning or early afternoon in North America.
In Europe, the Champions Hockey League opened its league phase on 3 September 2026. Its playoffs start on 10 November, and the competition ends with a one-game final on 23 February 2027.
