The American sports year for crypto bettors, from kickoff to the World Series

The United States runs four major league seasons that overlap for most of the year, across four mainland time zones. This guide lines up that calendar with the practical side of a crypto balance: which coin to hold, which network to send it on and how the clock affects your bet slip.

American sport does not have an off-season so much as a handover. Football gives way to basketball and hockey, baseball arrives before either has finished, and college basketball takes over March in between. For a bettor holding crypto, the useful question is not which league is on but how long each bet keeps your coins busy, and what time the slip will say the game starts.

The four big seasons, side by side

The major leagues overlap more than they separate. The table shows where each one sits in the year and how many games a team plays before the postseason.

LeagueRegular seasonGames per teamPostseason
NFLEarly September to early January, 18 weeks17Playoffs, then the Super Bowl in early February
NBAOctober to April82Best-of-seven rounds into June, ending with the Finals
NHLOctober to April8216 teams, four rounds, into June
MLBOpening Day in late March or early April, through the summer162October, ending with the World Series

Two things follow from that table. First, autumn is crowded: in October all four leagues can be playing in the same week. Second, the number of games shapes the markets. An NFL team plays once a week, so each game carries a lot of weight and the line moves on every injury report. A baseball team plays almost every day, so a single game says little and the starting pitcher matters more than the team name. Our NFL page and World Series guide go deeper on each.

College basketball adds its own peak. The NCAA Division I men's tournament is played mostly during March, which is why it carries the March Madness name, and the last weekend of it is the Final Four. A bracket opens dozens of games in a few days, so bankroll planning matters more than in any other week of the year.

Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific: reading the clock

The contiguous United States has four time zones. In standard time they sit at UTC−5 (Eastern), UTC−6 (Central), UTC−7 (Mountain) and UTC−8 (Pacific); during daylight saving time each moves one hour closer to UTC.

That matters because many sportsbooks list fixtures in UTC or in their own server time, not in yours. A game that starts at 8:00 pm Eastern in October is midnight UTC, so the coupon files it under the next day. A bettor in Los Angeles sees the same game at 5:00 pm. If you build an accumulator across a weekend, check each leg against one clock before you confirm it.

Daylight saving time begins at 2:00 am on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 am on the first Sunday of November. In 2026 the change back falls on 1 November, in the middle of the NFL regular season. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change their clocks at all, so the gap between them and the East Coast shifts twice a year.

How American bettors usually get crypto

The common route has three steps. Dollars leave a bank account for a crypto exchange, the exchange converts them, and the coins move to a personal wallet or straight to a sportsbook cashier. Some people buy from other individuals through P2P marketplaces instead, but the bank-to-exchange route is the usual one.

For an American, a dollar stablecoin removes a step most other countries have to deal with. Tether pegs USDT one-to-one with the dollar, so a 100 USDT stake is a 100-dollar stake. There is no exchange rate to track between placing the bet and cashing it out.

The step people get wrong is the network. USDT is issued on several chains, including Ethereum, Tron, Solana and Ton, and Tether's own FAQ tells users to pick the correct transport protocol when sending. If the cashier shows a Tron deposit address, the coins must leave your wallet on Tron.

What a small deposit costs to send

Network fees are paid in the network's own coin, and they behave differently on each chain.

  • Bitcoin. Fees vary with demand for block space. A small deposit sent during a busy period can lose a noticeable share to the fee.
  • Ethereum. A plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas, and the base fee can rise or fall by up to 12.5% per block as demand changes. Token transfers such as USDT on Ethereum use more gas than that.
  • Solana. The base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, which is 0.000005 SOL.
  • XRP Ledger. The minimum cost of a standard transaction is 10 drops, or 0.00001 XRP, and that amount is destroyed rather than paid to anyone.

Our estimate, for a deposit of 20 to 50 dollars: a stablecoin on Solana or Tron usually keeps more of the stake than the same coin on Ethereum. That is a rule of thumb, not a quote; check the fee your wallet shows before you send.

Crypto sports betting USA: matching the coin to the season

The length of a bet should decide the coin. A Monday night NFL game settles the same evening, so holding Bitcoin through it carries little price risk. A Super Bowl futures bet placed in September does not settle until February. Bitcoin's own FAQ still calls its price very volatile, and five months is a long time to hold a volatile coin.

An example. You stake 0.005 BTC on a team to win the title at 9.00 in September. If the team wins and Bitcoin has fallen by a fifth since September, the 0.045 BTC return is worth a fifth less in dollars than it would have been at the old price. Stake 300 USDT at the same 9.00 and the return is 2,700 USDT whatever Bitcoin did. For crypto sports betting USA style, with the dollar as the measure, that is the main case for stablecoins on futures.

Rainbet names USDT and USDC in its list and gives 72 hours to send documents once asked. Rocketpot lists USDT on Ethereum and on TRON plus USDC, pays within 72 hours and asks for documents above $2,500. Vave's six coins include USDT, with payouts in up to 3 days. CoinPoker and DuckDice both list USDT.

Crypto sports betting USA checklist for a weekend

  1. Decide the length of each bet first: a single game, a playoff series or a season-long future.
  2. Pick the coin from that: anything for a same-night game, a stablecoin for a future.
  3. Check the network the cashier expects and the fee your wallet shows.
  4. Convert every start time to one clock, especially across the November change.
  5. Size stakes from a plan made before the weekend; the bankroll guide sets one out, and the NBA page covers nightly basketball lines.

If betting stops being a hobby, the National Problem Gambling Helpline, run by the National Council on Problem Gambling, answers on 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) by phone, text or chat. Other markets are covered from the country index.

Which coin suits crypto sports betting USA readers who think in dollars?
A dollar stablecoin. Tether pegs USDT one-to-one with the US dollar, so a stake of 50 USDT is a stake of roughly 50 dollars, and the return does not drift while the game is played.
Why does my bet slip show the next day for an evening game?
Many sportsbooks list events in UTC. During daylight saving time Eastern Time is UTC−4, so a game starting at 8:00 pm Eastern is midnight UTC and appears under the following date.
When do American clocks change?
Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 am on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 am on the first Sunday of November. In 2026 it ends on 1 November. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year.
How long is an NFL futures bet open?
The regular season runs from early September to early January and the Super Bowl is played in early February, so a championship bet placed at the start can stay open for about five months.
Where can I get help if betting stops being fun?
The National Problem Gambling Helpline, run by the National Council on Problem Gambling, is 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), with phone, text and chat options.
