Athletics: the long wait between big days

Distance running gives Kenyan fans plenty to follow, but the betting calendar is thin. Marathons and championships come a few times a year, and outright prices are posted well in advance. Two dates on the near horizon: the Chicago Marathon on 11 October 2026, and the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing from 10 to 19 September 2027, with 49 events on the programme.

An outright on a championship a year away is a long hold. If you take one, take it in a stablecoin, and accept that start lists change: athletes withdraw, and whether a non-runner returns your stake depends on the market's rules. Read them before staking, not after the start list is published.

Rugby sevens and Shujaa

Kenya's sevens side, Shujaa, won its first series title at the 2016 Singapore Sevens, beating Fiji in the final, and the Safari Sevens is its home tournament. The top tier of the world series is now eight core teams, and Kenya was not among them in 2025–26. That matters for a bettor in a simple way: Kenyan matches outside the top tier may not be priced at all, so check the market list before depositing for them.

Crypto sports betting Kenya: M-Pesa to a wallet

M-Pesa, run by Safaricom since its launch in March 2007, moves shillings: deposits, withdrawals, transfers between people and payments to merchants. A crypto sportsbook needs coins. The bridge between the two is an exchange that accepts shillings, and one common way in is a P2P marketplace, where another user receives your M-Pesa payment and the exchange releases the coins to you once they confirm it.

A clean sequence looks like this:

1. Buy USDT on the exchange with shillings sent by M-Pesa.
2. Withdraw it to a wallet whose keys you hold.
3. Deposit from that wallet to the sportsbook, on a network the cashier lists.
4. Withdraw winnings back to the same wallet, then sell on the exchange.

Each step can carry a cost: the M-Pesa tariff on the transfer, the spread or fee on the exchange, and the network fee on each blockchain move. Safaricom sets the M-Pesa tariff; check the current band for your amount before you send.

Fees on small stakes, worked through

Here is an illustration with a rate that is our estimate only: at 129 shillings to one USDT, KES 1,000 buys about 7.75 USDT. A one-dollar network charge would cost close to 13% of that before any bet is placed. That is why the network matters more for Kenyan stakes than for most.

What the chains themselves document:

• TRON. Each account receives 600 bandwidth across a rolling 24 hours. A USDT transfer also consumes energy, which comes only from staking TRX or from TRX burned at the network's current rate. Hold a little TRX in the wallet so the transfer does not fail.
• Solana. The base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, and a lamport is a billionth of a SOL. A priority fee is optional.
• Ethereum. The cost is gas used times the base fee plus a tip; a plain ETH transfer takes 21,000 gas. On a busy day this is the wrong network for KES 1,000.
